We read The Poppy Lady by Barbara Elizabeth Walsh to learn about Moina Belle Michael who wanted to help the World War I American Troops. If you get a chance, read this book! Our 1st-5th graders loved it and enjoyed learning about history.
To celebrate Dr. Seuss' Birthday and Texas Independence Day, both on March 2, we are doing centers! All Pre-K 3 through 5th grade have a variety of centers that include; reading Dr. Seuss books, Texas symbols matching game, making your own Dr. Seuss bookmark, balloon stacking, balance a paper apple on your finger using clothes pins, coloring Texas symbol sheets, research a famous Texas, stack cups using index cards, and learning about the Texas Senate! WOO-WEE we are busy!!
This week in the library all students are learning how to log on into their myon account and reading books. Each student has an account. They can use myon at home or at school. What is myon? I pulled this from the website:
myON is an award-winning personalized literacy environment that incorporates:
Our GT group has started researching famous African American inventors, using mackinvia.com. They are going to create a poster using their research about the person they chose. The posters will be displayed around our school. More to come!
This week and last week we learned about George Washington and other presidents.
Kindergarteners are having fun in the library with centers! At one center they are making a book, American Treasure. This booklet has pictures of some of our presidents as well as some famous places in America. Prek is wrapping up their unit, Learning How to Stay Healthy, with fun centers including a coloring sheet showing students how to stay well! First grade is making a coloring booklet, All About the Presidents of the United States. Each page has a fun fact about a president. Did you know the teddy bear was named after President Theodore Roosevelt who refused to shoot a small bear during a hunting trip? Second graders have three centers to choose from to learn about our presidents, Four in a Row, A Presidential Timeline, and American Treasure coloring booklet. Third, fourth, and fifth graders are learning about the Culper Spy Book and are creating a sentence using the book. When they are finished they will switch with another group and decipher the code! We have a book club that meets twice a week. Right now our book club is learning how to write code using code.org. They are practicing for the next project; making robots move!! How cool is that?!?!
Today, we had author/illustrator Jeff Crosby come and talk with our 2nd graders. He had the students participate while he read his latest book, The Rockabilly Goats Gruff. Ths students had so much fun and learned about fractured fairy tales and onomatopoeia. They also made a fractured fairy tale together! Thank you Jeff Crosby!! You Rock!!!
